Hello - my name is Angela Snowball. I'm from Australia and came to Beijing four years ago with my husband, Stuart. While living in Beijing, I've studied Chinese, worked in communications, and most recently been looking after our two boys, Tom and Harry, both born in Beijing. As an 'Ivy Mom', feel free to send me any questions you may have about Ivy or life in Beijing. |

Hi Amanda
Yes, 2 years is a relatively early age to begin nursery school compared with our home countries. Our eldest son, Tom, enjoys playing with other children of a similar age, and we felt that Ivy provided a good opportunity to do more of this, as well as get involved in some activities, like music, art and craft and physical recreation.
Where Beijing differs from Australia and perhaps the UK, is that the summers are long and hot, and winters long and cold. Many families live in apartments; there is not the same ¡®backyard¡¯ culture as home ¨C and so at times there is more of a focus on indoor play. A school with a nursery program, such as Ivy, was a good option for Tom to have fun with new friends and teachers and join in some new activities that he had not experienced before. That¡¯s not to say that there aren¡¯t good parks and indoor play centres in Beijing, there are several!
Tom attends Ivy three mornings a week, which we find is a good balance with home life. He is learning to express himself and to share favourite toys through activities such as the regular ¡®show and tell¡¯ on Monday. He¡¯s learnt lots of new songs, including some in Chinese, and has had fun exploring the recent Chinese New Year festival. He is also much more interested in painting and craft than he was previously (more attention span). Socially, he is playing and communicating with children from different countries, another point of difference from home.
A bit of an essay I¡¯m afraid, but I hope this is some help to you. All the best with your upcoming move!
Best regards
Angela

Hi Angela,
We just enrolled our baby Ripley to the nursery class. She will start next Monday for morning class. I have a concern that she will cry coming to the new school, reluctant to go to school. Could you share some of your secrets how to help your child to fit in easily? Thanks |
